The Braderie de Lille is much more than a simple flea market. It is a true popular festival that transforms the capital of Flanders into an immense playground for bargain hunting, gastronomy and conviviality. For nearly 40 uninterrupted hours, from Saturday morning to Sunday evening, the streets of Lille come alive with a unique energy.
The origins of the braderie date back to the 12th century, when servants were authorised to sell their masters' old clothes. The word "braderie" actually comes from the Dutch word "braden" meaning "to roast", in reference to the grilled meat sellers who accompanied the medieval markets. Over the centuries, the event has considerably grown to become the unmissable gathering we know today.
The diversity of stalls is one of the great strengths of the Braderie. You can find absolutely everything:
Antique professionals are mainly concentrated in the Vieux-Lille quarter and around rue Esquermoise, while private sellers occupy the majority of the city centre streets. The streets around the Grand'Place and place du Général de Gaulle are the liveliest and most frequented.
The Braderie de Lille is open to everyone! As a visitor, entry is entirely free. You can walk freely through all the streets involved, browse, negotiate and discover the exhibitors' hidden treasures.
If you wish to sell as an exhibitor, two options are available. Residents of the city centre can set up their stand outside their home by applying to the city council. Lille benefits from excellent transport links. The TGV connects Paris to Lille in just 1 hour, Brussels in 35 minutes and London in 1 hour 20 minutes via Eurostar. By car, it is strongly advised against driving to the city centre during the Braderie. Many streets are closed to traffic, and parking spaces are extremely scarce. Use the park-and-ride car parks on the outskirts and public transport (metro, tramway, bus) to reach the centre.

The Braderie de Lille is subject to a major security operation set up by the City of Lille and the Prefecture du Nord. Security perimeters are established, with access checks at the main entrances to the braderie zone. First aid posts, water points and toilets are distributed throughout the perimeter. A specific emergency number is generally communicated a few days before the event.
In the event of cancellation for weather or security reasons, the decision is taken by the Prefect of the Nord department in consultation with the City of Lille. The information is then relayed on official channels and local media.
If you are coming from afar, it is strongly recommended to book your accommodation well in advance. Lille hotels fill up several weeks before the Braderie, and prices increase considerably.
