Estaminets are the heart and soul of Lille's social life. These traditional taverns, inherited from Flemish culture, are far more than simple restaurants: they are meeting places of sharing and conviviality where time seems to stand still over a regional beer and a generous dish.
What is an estaminet?
The word «estaminet» comes from Walloon and refers to a café-restaurant typical of Northern France and Belgium. Historically, it was a place where workers gathered after work to drink a beer, play cards or darts, and share neighbourhood news. Today, estaminets perpetuate this tradition in a warm setting of patinated wood, exposed bricks and chequered tablecloths.
Specialities to savour
The menu of an estaminet is a journey through Northern gastronomy. You will find carbonnade flamande (beef braised in dark beer), welsh (toast with melted cheddar in beer), potjevleesch (meat terrine in aspic), flamiche au Maroilles and of course moules-frites. Desserts are equally impressive with sugar tart, cramique and waffles filled with vergeoise sugar.
On the drinks side, Northern craft beers take pride of place: bières de garde, blondes, ambers and triples are served in glasses specific to each brand.
Estaminet games
A genuine estaminet always offers traditional games: Dutch billiards, darts, the frog game or trou madame. These wooden games, passed down from generation to generation, are an integral part of the experience. Don't hesitate to ask the landlord for a demonstration!
Where to find the best estaminets in Lille?
Old Lille has several authentic estaminets, particularly in rue de Gand and rue des Vieux-Murs. The Wazemmes neighbourhood also has some, with a more popular atmosphere. For a complete experience, venture out to the villages of French Flanders where country estaminets offer a total change of scenery.
During the Braderie de Lille, estaminets are packed. Book well in advance or come early. Check our recommendations on the restaurants page.
