The official security system
The Nord prefecture deploys a reinforced security system every year. Bag checks are carried out at the entrances to the pedestrian perimeter. Anti-intrusion barriers protect the busiest areas. Police officers, gendarmes and private security agents patrol continuously.
Protecting yourself from pickpockets
The dense crowd is unfortunately conducive to pickpocketing. A few simple rules will help you protect yourself effectively:
- Wallet and phone: store them in a closed inner pocket, never in a back pocket
- Backpack: wear it on your front in the densest areas
- Cash: spread your money across different pockets
- Valuables: leave at the hotel anything you do not need
First aid stations and health
Red Cross first aid stations are distributed along the entire route, identifiable by their green signage. City centre pharmacies remain open during the Braderie. In case of heatstroke, injury or faintness, do not hesitate to seek help from first aiders.
Remember to stay hydrated regularly and apply sunscreen. Even in September, the sun can be strong amid the crowd. Drinking water fountains are installed at various points along the route.
